Using selected aromatic compounds, the students compare the characteristic reaction behavior of this class of compounds with that of known hydrocarbons. In doing so, they also become aware of the limitations of previous bonding models. Mesomerism complements these model concepts and forms the basis for understanding bonding in aromatic molecules. When dealing with the reaction mechanism of electrophilic substitution as well as the influence of an aromatic residue on the properties of known functional groups, the students repeat important basics about structure-property relationships of organic molecules from grade 10 and learn that aromatic compounds play an important role as basic materials of numerous everyday products.

The development of the relationship between the physical and chemical properties of substances and the molecular structure also leads the students to aspects of healthy nutrition and makes clear to them the role of fats as renewable raw materials. Starting with soaps as the most widely known surfactants, they learn not only about the mode of action of detergent substances, but also about the importance of synthetic surfactants in everyday life today.

By decision of the general conference in April 2016, chemistry classes at Gymnasium Lilienthal will begin in the sixth grade starting in the 2015/16 school year. Chemistry is taught two hours per week in grades 6, 8 and 10 and one hour per week in grade 9. There are no chemistry lessons in Year 7.
